Saint Sépulcre church
According to the legend, the knights of the North of France, guided by Guy de Ponthieu, gathered in Abbeville where they were inspected by Godefroy de Bouillon at the end of the 11th century. A church dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre was erected on the very site of the knights’ meeting to remember this reunion.
In 1982, the inspector of Ancient Monuments (F. Enaud) asked Alfred Manessier (painter of the Baie de Somme) to create Saint Sepulchre’s stained-glass windows. The windows, almost completed at that time, were inaugurated on May 30th 1993: they celebrate the victory of life upon anguish, suffering and death and create a generous world of colours. They also evoke the last days of the Christ and his resurrection, from the Last Supper to Gethsemane, from the dawn of the Good Friday to loneliness…
